In 2027, Santiago de Compostela will celebrate a Holy Year (Jubilee Year), a special event that occurs only when the Feast of St. James falls on a Sunday.
Pilgrims from around the world will travel to Santiago during this extraordinary year.
As Catholics, we have a unique opportunity to participate in one of the Church's oldest pilgrimage traditions during a year of special spiritual significance.

OUR CAMINO ROUTE ALONG THE FRENCH WAY
For centuries, pilgrims have journeyed to Santiago de Compostela from every corner of Europe, following ancient paths that all lead to the tomb of St. James. While some walk for weeks or even months, the final 100 kilometers of the Camino Francés have become the most beloved and accessible section of the pilgrimage.
This stretch offers everything that has made the Camino famous: peaceful forests, rolling Galician countryside, charming stone villages, welcoming cafés, centuries-old churches, and countless opportunities to meet fellow pilgrims from around the world. It is also the minimum distance required to receive the official Compostela, the certificate awarded to pilgrims who complete the Camino with a spirit of pilgrimage.
Walking the final 100 kilometers allows us to experience the beauty, challenge, and rich traditions of the Camino while creating space for prayer, conversation, personal reflection, and lasting friendships. It is long enough to be transformed by the journey and achievable enough for those making the Camino for the first time.
For many pilgrims, these final days are not simply the end of the Camino—they become the beginning of something new.

These will arrive in steps, covering everything you need to know, pack, train and prepare before embarking on the Camino de Santiago....
so by the time you get here, you’ll already feel confident and ready to go.
Comfortable Accommodations Along the Camino
After each day's walk, you'll enjoy the comfort of carefully selected hotels and historic guesthouses that reflect the warmth and hospitality of northern Spain. Our accommodations range from charming family-owned inns to comfortable three and four-star hotels, located directly on the Camino de Santiago or within easy walking distance of the trail.
Each property has been chosen for its welcoming atmosphere, private en suite rooms, and convenient location. Many feature amenities such as on-site restaurants, gardens, terraces, swimming pools, fitness facilities, and beautiful views of the Galician countryside. While every hotel has its own unique character, all provide a comfortable place to rest, refresh, and prepare for the next day's journey.
To experience an important part of Camino tradition, we also plan to spend one evening in an authentic albergue. Unlike the large dormitory-style accommodations often associated with the Camino, our group will stay in private rooms while enjoying the unique atmosphere, fellowship, and simplicity that have welcomed pilgrims from around the world for centuries.
This is not a rustic backpacking trip. We believe a good night's sleep, a hot shower, and comfortable accommodations are an important part of the pilgrimage experience, allowing you to fully embrace both the physical and spiritual journey while still experiencing the authentic spirit of the Camino.
Savoring Spain: More about Meals
One of the great joys of the Camino is gathering around the table. Throughout our pilgrimage, we'll share several special group dinners where we can celebrate the day's journey, enjoy authentic Spanish cuisine, and build community together. Hotel breakfasts are included whenever provided, giving us a nourishing start before each day's walk. Many often begin walking quite early and eat breakfast along 'the way' so we want you to have that flexibility.
Most lunches and several dinners are intentionally left open. Along the Camino, nearly every village offers inviting cafés, bakeries, and family-owned restaurants where pilgrims gather from around the world. These unhurried meals often become some of the most memorable moments of the journey, providing opportunities to sample regional specialties, linger over conversation, and form new friendships with fellow pilgrims.
Galician cuisine is known for its excellent seafood, artisan cheeses, hearty soups, fresh-baked breads, locally raised meats, seasonal vegetables, and delicious empanadas. Be sure to sample regional favorites such as Pulpo a la Gallega (Galician-style octopus), Pimientos de Padrón (small blistered peppers), Caldo Gallego (a traditional potato and greens soup), and the famous Tarta de Santiago, a delicate almond cake that has welcomed pilgrims for centuries.
As we will all be walking at our own pace, we'll have the freedom to choose where and when to eat, whether that means enjoying a quiet lunch in a village square, sharing tapas with new friends, or discovering a local restaurant recommended by fellow travelers. This flexibility is part of the authentic Camino experience and allows each pilgrim to enjoy Spain's rich culinary traditions at their own pace. Do you have dietary restrictions? Day 1 • Monday, September 20 | Depart the United States
Meet fellow pilgrims at the departure airport and begin our journey to Spain. Overnight flight to Barcelona.

Day 2 • Tuesday, September 21 | Welcome to Barcelona
Walking: Arrive in Barcelona and transfer to our hotel. After time to rest and adjust to the time change, we'll gather for a
welcome dinner, pilgrimage orientation, and receive our Camino credentials and pilgrim journals. Overnight in Barcelona.
Day 3 • Wednesday, September 22 | Barcelona
Spend the day exploring one of Europe's most beautiful cities. Visit the magnificent Sagrada Família, celebrate Mass (if available), and learn about the remarkable faith and vision of Antoni Gaudí. Continue through the Gothic Quarter, visit the Cathedral of Barcelona, stroll along Las Ramblas, and enjoy free time to explore. In the evening, we'll gather for a special Pilgrim Blessing before beginning the Camino. Overnight in Barcelona.
Day 4 • Thursday, September 23 | To the Camino
Fly from Barcelona to Santiago de Compostela before boarding our private coach to Sarria, the traditional starting point for the final 100 kilometers of the Camino Francés. After checking into our hotel, we'll collect our first Camino stamp, get the 'lay of the land' and our starting point, attend Pilgrim Mass (if available), and
enjoy dinner together while preparing for our first walking day. Overnight in Sarria.
Day 5 • Friday, September 24 | Sarria to Portomarín
Walking Distance: 13.7 miles Our pilgrimage officially begins as we walk through rolling countryside, shaded forests, charming villages, and ancient stone churches. We'll celebrate reaching the beautiful riverside town of Portomarín. Overnight in Portomarín.
Day 6 • Saturday, September 25 | Portomarín to Palas de Rei
Walking Distance: 15.5 miles. Today's walk winds through peaceful Galician farmland, gentle hills, and picturesque villages. Along the way we'll stop for cafe con leches, pastries, conversation, and prayer before arriving in the historic town of Palas de Rei. Overnight in Palas de Rei.
Day 7 • Sunday, September 26 | Palas de Rei to Melide
Walking Distance: 9 miles. A shorter walking day allows time to slow down and enjoy the Camino. Attend Mass if available, relax in village cafés, and explore Melide, famous throughout Galicia for its local cuisine and welcoming atmosphere. Overnight in Melide.
Day 8 • Monday, September 27 | Melide to Arzúa
Walking Distance: 8.5 miles Walk beneath towering eucalyptus trees and through quiet countryside where the pace of life slows. This is one of the most peaceful stretches of the Camino. Overnight in Arzúa.
Day 9 • Tuesday, September 28 | Arzúa to O Pedrouzo
Walking Distance: 11.8 miles. As Santiago draws closer, excitement begins to build. We'll continue through forests and small villages. Overnight in O Pedrouzo.
Day 10 • Wednesday, September 29 | O Pedrouzo to Santiago de Compostela
Walking Distance: 12.4 miles. Our final walking day begins early as we make our way toward Santiago. We'll pause at Monte do Gozo, the "Hill of Joy," where pilgrims catch their first glimpse of the Cathedral towers before walking together into the Plaza del Obradoiro. After receiving our Compostela certificates, we'll celebrate with a

group dinner. Overnight in Santiago de Compostela.
Day 11 • Thursday, September 30 | Santiago de Compostela
Enjoy a slower-paced day in one of Christianity's great pilgrimage destinations. Attend the Pilgrim Mass and, if able, experience the awe-inspiring Botafumeiro ceremony. Visit the tomb of St. James, explore the Cathedral Museum and historic Old Town, browse local markets, or simply enjoy quiet time for prayer and reflection. We'll conclude our pilgrimage with a festive
farewell dinner together. Overnight in Santiago de Compostela.
Day 12 • Friday, October 1 | Return Home
Depart Santiago de Compostela and begin our journey home, carrying with us unforgettable memories, lasting friendships, and the many blessings of the Camino.

How to Register
Registration is easy!
- Complete the online Registration Form below.
- Read and sign the Pilgrimage Registration Agreement found within the Registration Form.
- Submit your $875 deposit by check, payable to DDMC/Gap Year Basecamp, and deliver or mail it to the St. Columba Parish Office.
Your registration is complete once we have received your registration form, signed agreement, and deposit. You will receive a confirmation email once your space has been reserved.
Registration Deadline: August 15, 2026, or until the pilgrimage reaches capacity.

How difficult is this trip?
This pilgrimage includes approximately six days of walking, averaging 9 to 15 miles each day. While the terrain is generally gentle, participants should prepare by walking regularly before the trip. You do not need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable spending several hours on your feet each day.
Why begin in Barcelona?
Our time in Barcelona allows us to ease into the rhythm of Spain, explore the magnificent Sagrada Família, recover from jet lag, and prepare our hearts before beginning the Camino. It provides a beautiful transition from everyday life into the pilgrimage experience.
How many people will be in the group?
We keep this group small (24 max) so you get personal support and the group can be cohesive. If your backpack is calling and your courage is growing, don’t wait.
Why walk the final 100 kilometers?
Walking the final 100 kilometers of the Camino Francés is the minimum distance required to receive the official Compostela Certificate. This section also includes some of the most beautiful scenery, welcoming villages, and memorable experiences along the entire Camino.
What if I can't complete a day's walk?
This is your pilgrimage. Walk at your own pace and listen to your body. Our support vehicle and local transportation options provide flexibility if you need to shorten a day's walk or take time to rest. Our goal is for every pilgrim to arrive in Santiago with joy and confidence.
Will there be personal time for prayer and reflection?
Absolutely. While we will share meals, Masses, and several guided experiences as a group, much of the Camino is wonderfully personal. There will be opportunities to walk in conversation with friends, pray in silence, attend daily Mass when available, journal, reflect, or simply enjoy the beauty of the Spanish countryside. One of the greatest gifts of the Camino is the freedom to experience it in the way your heart needs most.
Do I need to know Spanish?
No, you don’t need to speak Spanish to join the program. However, learning a few basic greetings and travel phrases is highly encouraged—not only out of respect for the local culture but also because it’s incredibly useful in real travel situations like ordering food, buying tickets, or asking for directions. A little goes a long way when navigating a new country and it's a sign of respect to make an attempt to converse in the local tongue.
How do I apply?
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and an application is considered complete when the form has been filled out and the initial deposit has been paid. Of this fee, $250 will be a non-refundable administrative fee.
